Fans had suspected that American Idol 2020 couple Margie Mays and Jonny West had broken up, but now Margie finally confirms the split in a rambly Youtube video posted over the New Years holiday. In the 23 minute video, Margie explains that she hesitated from confirming their split, because of her own denial.
Both competitors were devastated Mays wasn’t advancing, but what may surprise some is that Mays was still thrilled to see West continue his journey. There had been online chatter regarding Margie Mays and Jonny West’s relationship since the start of American Idol, perhaps aided by the edit of the episodes.
So far, neither Jonny nor Margie has confirmed that they’re broken up. Although both Jonny and Margie have still been posting regularly on social media, they have not brought up their relationship or a possible breakup.
You may remember that Jonny and fellow contestant Margie Mays, who also competed on Season 16, were a couple. She held his hand through all the hard parts of the competition. But she was eliminated before him, in Hollywood.
What is Jonny’s new song about?
Jonny’s new song seems to be about the breakup. What brought the questions to the forefront, probably, was Jonny dropping a new song in early December, “All the Words” which appeared to be about the breakup.
Jonny made it to the finals, and their relationship again was heavily featured and part of his story. So of course fans are going to be all over them on the status of their relationship because that was the “story” American Idol chose to showcase for them.
Also, the breakup, which happened earlier in 2020, left some hard feelings. Margie left the competition at the end of the Hawaii showcase, while Jonny finished in the Top 5. “ Yes there was a breakup,” admits Margie in the video.
The breakup was not kind, it was not caring, Margie says. But then, Margie gets real honest: “The problem is, and I say this with no aggression, but just with honesty, I don’t want to be a liar. The breakup was not kind it was not caring. It was not respectful.
The backstory is Margie actually auditioned and was heavily featured the season prior, although she was cut towards the end of Hollywood Week. She again was featured the next season, but brought reluctant boyfriend Jonny along who sort of auditioned on a whim.

The couple has apparently been quarantining together for the past couple of months, but we found out during the Mother’s Day performances that is no longer the case. Jonny recorded his Mother’s Day performance from his parents’ house rather than at the apartment he has been sharing with Margie.
Although both Jonny and Margie have still been posting regularly on social media, they have not brought up their relationship or a possible breakup. We definitely get that! If they are broken up, it’s a super awkward time to announce it — Jonny is obviously trying to focus on his final performances for the show.
