Bette Midler made her film debut in the musical drama The Rose (1979), for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and won the Golden Globe for Best Actress; Motion Picture Comedy or Musical.

The Divine Miss M, her debut album, earned a Grammy. The single “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” debuted at number one on the Billboard “Adult Contemporary” chart, while the album peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200.
