Chip Dox, a distinguished production designer and art director known for his remarkable work on soap operas including ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘General Hospital’, has left a significant void in the entertainment industry. He passed away on August 15 at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the annals of television history.
During his illustrious 27-year career, Chip Dox garnered acclaim and admiration for his exceptional contributions to the world of soap operas. He was a two-time recipient of the Daytime Emmy Awards, a testament to his unparalleled talent and dedication.
Chip’s creative prowess extended beyond soap operas, as he also designed touring shows for renowned acts such as Elton John, The Beach Boys, Chicago, Jackson Browne, and Earth, Wind & Fire. He collaborated with Tracey Ullman on her iconic Fox sitcom ‘Tracey Takes On’, as well as on several other notable projects including the Lifetime comedy ‘Oh Baby’ and the Telemundo sitcoms ‘Viva Vegas’ and ‘Los Beltrán’.
With an impressive 17-year tenure at NBC’s ‘Days of Our Lives’, Chip Dox earned his first Emmy in 1997. His journey continued at ABC, where he contributed to ‘General Hospital’, the spinoff ‘Port Charles’, and the primetime soap ‘Nightshift’. His outstanding work garnered him another Emmy in 2011, solidifying his status as a true industry luminary. Chip concluded his exceptional career in 2015 upon retirement.
Beyond his remarkable accomplishments in production design, Chip was known for his ability to create elaborate sets and breathtaking visuals within the constraints of a daytime soap opera budget. His journey took him from local theater to the prestigious Carnegie Institute of Technology. After serving in the U.S. Army, Chip returned to his alma mater to share his expertise as a teacher.
Chip’s dedication extended to charitable endeavors as well. He volunteered for Broadway charity events and made a difference in the lives of the homeless through the Hang Out Do Good initiative, preparing brown bag lunches on Sundays.
Survived by his wife of 29 years, former ‘Days of Our Lives’ producer and production manager Jeanne Haney, Chip leaves behind a rich legacy that also includes daughters Morgan, Katie, and Hayley; stepdaughter Megan; and grandchildren Rae, Kiddo, Henry, and Charlie.
