The latest Netflix film based on a true story has arrived, and it’s one of the most outrageous ones yet. Madame Claude is focused on the infamous brothel owner whose real name was Fernande Grudet. She rose to notoriety in the 1960s as the head of a network of French call girls specifically for foreign dignitaries and political powerhouses.
She is complemented by Garance Marrilier’s Sidonie, a daughter of a French diplomat who was raped by her father when she was seven, and eventually turned into a sex worker.
It makes them spineless and hence they fail to generate the revolution on screen. Madame Claude is a 2021 Biopic based on the life of Fernande Grudet written and directed by Sylvie Verheyde. The film is streaming on Netflix.

The Netflix film Madame Claude follows Madame Claude throughout her life, portrayed by Karole Rocher, as Paris’s most notorious brothel-keeper. Not only was she well-known for her girls, but also her lavish persona and high standards.
In 1994, she wrote a “memoir,” but it was reportedly more fiction than fact, as Madame Claude was famous for embellishing her truths to sound more glamorous. For example, she claims she grew up in an aristocratic family, but it’s known by historians that she had a modest background and came from the Anjou region of France.
Sidonie may not be real, but she may not be completely fictional either. As much as it would be incredible for every element of Madame Claude to be true, it’s almost impossible to know the entirely true story of Madame Claude’s life.
She’s been in several French projects, both on Netflix and in film festivals, so her turn as Sido nie in Madame Claude is definitely not her first. Garance is both an actress and a model, which makes her the perfect fit for a character like Sidonie.
However, it is entirely possible that Madame Claude had someone like Sidonie in her life, but that she would not have shared this information with the world for fear it would encroach on her image of power and leadership.
She tells a story of selling Bibles, but it’s more likely that she was selling herself on the streets, which is what led to her becoming the most elite brothel-keeper in all of France and possibly the world. It’s very possible that Madame Claude had a Sidonie-like figure in her life, but this is something we may never know.

The film’s script instead puts one of her atypical call-girls, Sidonie, into the role of surrogate daughter, and in the film’s closing moments we see her layout to Grudet during a phone call that she left because she was scared Grudet would hurt her how she hurts others and herself.
The film is primarily concerned with the present, introducing Grudet at the peak of her success, with her ideology most completely formed, and then allowing it all to spiral thanks to the interference of the state.
