On Saturday, members of the Covington community rallied in solidarity with a family who had recently lost a child to suicide and to protest bullying.
Terry Badger III, age 13, passed away on March 6. His death is being blamed on bullying in numerous reports received by News 18. Signs reading “Bullying is over” and “If you can’t be kind, be quiet” were among those held by mourners at the March 11 memorial.
On Saturday, hundreds of people came to pay their respects to Badger’s family at the baseball field in Covington City Park. This is the same field where his father used to take him to practice baseball.
Release of balloons marked the conclusion of the memorial walk and candlelight vigil.
Tony Badger, Terry’s uncle, has expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of community support following the tragic loss of Terry.
You could tell how much he was loved, Tony said. “It’s amazing, to say the least. Simply put, I haven’t had time to work up much of an emotional fervor. I’ve got a family to look after and all that. There’s no doubt that TB was well-liked, what with the crowd out front, the kids playing behind us, and his presence on the jumbotron.”
Tony’s nephew is a huge sports fan who particularly enjoys baseball. He claimed that not even those closest to you could know what was going on in your loved ones’ heads.
“I would have thought this boy would have been the last (person) ever to be in this situation in his mind,” he said while holding his wife, Summer. “It’s tragic for everyone involved that he couldn’t move past that moment. That call will always stick out in my mind. As soon as I hear the door, I scream for my kids to come inside. Easily the worst day of my entire life.”
He advocates for people to be compassionate and to speak up for the oppressed.
