He managed to swim to a nearby island.

He shot Sheriff Peterkin to save his dad while John B fled. Because Ward is a garbage person, he blamed John B for Sheriff Peterkin’s murder. That lie sparked an island-wide manhunt to find the teen by any means necessary. There was a $25,000 reward placed on his head and everything.

Big John finally figured out where the Royal Merchant was, but before he told Ward he wanted the other man to promise that they would split the gold 80/20. This infuriated Ward who was expecting a 50/50 divide. The two got into a fistfight, which ended with Ward shoving Big John into a cleat.

All throughout Outer Banks Season 1 Sheriff Peterkin (Adina Porter) was suspicious of Big John’s death. She finally put all the pieces together and confronted Ward about it right as he was in the middle of dragging his daughter and a ton of shipwrecked gold to the Bahamas.
